In the last post, the question was “As an entrepreneur, what are you most fearful of?
Thank you for responding to this question.
List below are some of the responses that was received.
1) Fear of Failure
2) Fear of Success
3) Fear of Selling
4) Fear of Public Speaking
5) Fear of Taking the First Step
6) Fear of Putting Yourself Out There
7) Fear of Not Making Enough Money
and the list continues…
Here are some techniques used to help alleviate your Fears.
1) Acknowledging your fear is a good thing. It is okay and normal to have fears and anxiety about certain things. This gives us time to assess what is holding us back.
2) Taking the first step is the hardest, however once you put your foot in the door it gets a little bit easier. I remember my fear of public speaking. Yes, I have many fears and have come along way to shift my mindset. Had to do a presentation and the VP of the company was there. I froze and not a peep or sound came out of my mouth. My manager had me take a public speaking course and after that I joined Toastmasters International. Even till this day, those butterflies are still in my stomach and I cringe at the thought of presenting. Yet, I practice my speech and present now with less anxieties.
3) When working with coaches, one of the techniques used is to have their clients send their fear away through visualization exercises. Having a coach is a good thing. My next post is information about coaching.
4) Another technique, is to imagine that if fear was no longer an issue and not holding you back. What would that look like?
5) See yourself in the future (5 or 10 years from now) and you made your dreams come true and it is a reality. Your future self wanted to send you a message. What would your future self tell you regarding this fear that you have right now?
I hope that you enjoyed today’s blog post. Listed above are just some of the techniques used. What are some of the methods and techniques that you have personally used to reduce or alleviate your fears? Love to hear from you. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

Hey Jane,
This is a great post. Using your imagination to conquer fear is a very powerful technique. I’m sure this will help a lot of people get over their fears. (or at least start to)
thanks for sharing,
have a great day,

Yes, visualization exercises are excellent techniques to alleviate and reduce fear. What one imagines becomes a reality. Thank you for the comments. Come visit again.
Fear of public speaking is often more of problem than a lot of people
realise. The first time I gave a lecture was terrifying, but practice made
it a little easier. I agree that it is mind over matter and visualization can only
help.

Thank you for sharing you experiences with public speaking. There are so many people out there that are uncomfortable with speaking in front of groups.
Yes, my old friend fear. I think no matter what level I reach in my career, there is always fear because there is a new level to push through. The goals just get bigger (and scarier). I love your technique #4 – that sounds like a great way to move through some big hurdles.

Sometimes it’s like walking on the tightrope but once you are up there it’s not that bad. Glad to hear that you love technique #4. Thank you for your comment.
I find that reminding myself that the current situation ‘is what it is’, that self talk doesn’t change the situation but in fact, only makes it worse so if I can calm the inner dragon, usually feel much better. Thanks for the great tips!

Awesome point with calming the inner dragon- Love the way you call it the “inner dragon” (other terms used- gremlins, inner voices, loyal soldiers, etc…
Jane,
Love your idea about visualizing the outcome you desire. I remember my mentor commenting about having butterflies in your stomach over anything challenging. Her adivce was to get those butterflies flying in formation! Take your fear, take charge of it and utilize it to move through that which scares you. Once to take that step, you find it wasn’t as bad as you imagined!
Great advice. Thanks so much for sharing,
Val

Thank you for sharing one of your mentor’s advice on “Getting those butterflies flying in formation”. This is very powerful.
I agree with Val that your point about visualizing the desired outcome; if you believe that you can do something and focus on the desired outcome, it’s like you start making things happen towards that end implicitly or directly. My main fear right now is failure. “There are so many great sites out there already, so why would someone be interested in mine?” kind of thinking. To deal with it, I keep trying to produce great blog entries.

Kimberly-
One of the most common fears and listed as one of the top 10 is the Fear of Failure.
Yes, I am on the same boat with you regard that particular fear. So let me ask you this question, Why would someone not be interested in your services/website or blog?
Jane,
I love #5 the best , See yourself in the future, in the beginning of being my own boss i had that fear of what if i fail and with the so called security of a job what i would give up but seeing what lies ahead and what my dreams were and my vision was for my business, im glad i left the workforce 2 years ago and now am my own boss and loving it.

Great to hear that you love technique #5 with seeing your future self; and sharing with us your personal experience. Congratulations with the continued success of your business.
I think that I feel like a small fish in a big sea. There are so many English teachers and numerous sites and blogs about English that I wonder if I won’t develop a following. As well, there’s a great deal that’s is free for teachers online, so will what I produce be good enough that people would be willing to pay for it. It’s a new realm for me as well…online marketing…business, so I am unsure at times.

Kimberly:
I can see the big sea and the small fish. What is the fish up to lately?
Eventhough, there are many English teacher as well as sites and blogs about English. What is it about Kimberly that sets them apart from all the small fishes?
Best wishes with your online business.
Jane
Interesting discussion. If only there was a magic pill to make our fears disappear. Then we could just move forward and get done what needs to get done. I really like the idea of our future self, sending a time-travelled “slap” back to our current self. I might try that one

If there were a magic pill to make our fears disappear that company would make a fortune.
Good thing there is not a magic pill available for we must look within ourselves to find the answers.
these fears are constant…it pulls us down sometimes..it makes us want to discontinue what we have started..

Hi Jung:
Fear can be defined in so many different terms. Fear can make us take action or hold us back.
There are different levels of fear. Uncovering and looking at the fear is key.
The fear of failure is the biggest fear of almost all person that i know. Including me. But as time goes by I learn that each failure is just another stepping stone for success. The more I fail the more I strive hard to be successful.
